Freedom of expression

To me freedom of expression is having the ability to share your thoughts and your ideas publically, were one is not afraid to share these thoughts as in some areas of the world the freedom to express your thoughts is non-existant.

My name is Phindile Pearl Ngubane, well im currently in KwaZulu Natal, Durban. I am currently a student in the University of KwaZulu Natal doing Bachelor of Social Science in Geography and Environmental Management. As a university student I have a dream of finishing my degree and the next year do my honours. If this is fulfilled I would have accomplished my goal as a university student. My life is basically based on campus as I am a full time student.

My main sources of information are the television(especially news24) written in English and published in DSTV, the newspapers(any that I can get hold of) but mostly Isolezwe, written in IsiZulu and I also read The Sunday Sun, that is given to people living in and around Isipingo, and the radio as I usually listen to 5fm dominated by English speaking DJs and I also listen to Gagasi Fm that has IsiZulu dominated DJs. When I want to know more on local or international celebrities and fashion I usually read magazines like Cosmopolitan and The Heat magazines both magazines cature for an English readers.

South Africa is a new democratic country that is why we have Section 16 on the constitution that catures for the freedom of expression. To me personally this is a vital right because the public has a right to know on what is happening around them as they, the people, participate on voting for a national party that they may think will serve them well and will meet their needs as the citizens of the country. Freedom of press is vital especially for a democratic country like South Africa, but newspapers especially tend to make a profit out of the right of Freedom of Expression, the journalists make a mockery of the people in high positions like the politicians personal lives which is unethical to do. Therefore there should be a small amount of limitations, to respecting the personal lives of anyone in the public eye.
